Post #26: The Time Between Life And Death

The Time Between Life And Death

It dawns upon you like a bee landing on a flower. When you’re just standing there, not knowing why, wondering about the mysteries of the world. When you realize you can’t stand there forever, even though you long to.

Your mind travels, from the grassy hill you were standing on into a cold, steel room. Your prison. Where you have to go again and again in order to continue on with your life. Where you work ‘till your fingers turn numb. Where you sacrifice your energy, your time, and your dignity, just to earn enough money to sustain your life. It haunts you, the fact that the next day you have to face those same tragedies again.

But then, you see hope. A slight crack in the wall. Through it, a breath of fresh air. You remember laughter, and it lightens your heart. A smile plays across your face. You reminisce about your first wedding anniversary cake. You feel the same goosebumps you felt when you first held your newborns with trembling hands, shielding them from the world, close to your heart. You yearn for your mother’s embrace and your father’s warm smile. The happiest moments of your life.

But then, it seems to flicker, and it starts fading. The scene changes. You start travelling to who knows where, at a great speed and you feel vulnerable. The traumas of your past hits you again and it’s too strong. You feel like you’re falling. You really are. Falling down a cliff, falling far, far down, a never ending experience. No, it isn’t fun. It doesn’t feel like skydiving. It feels more like you’re plunging to your doom. You don’t know when it will stop, and it hurts to know that you don’t know. You long to go back to when you were happy. But you can’t. When you try to think about what exactly is happening to you, your memory fails you. You feel a flurry of emotions, but the cause of each one is a mystery. It’s like you are letting go of everything, everyone you ever cared about, and you just can’t grab back on.

And suddenly, you see an image. A face to be precise. But you don’t know who’s. It just stares at you with a wicked smile and cold, unforgiving eyes. And finally, you understand, and, for the last time, your eyes fill with tears …then all goes black.
