The Power Outlet

Electrical Vehicles Series (Part 1)

When we open our eyes in the morning, we see a flash of light. It’s the sun rays streaming through our windows. But as the day progresses, the sun slowly fades away, and by the time it’s evening, the sky is almost completely gray. But there is still light. There is still something to brighten our lives so that we don’t have to dwell in darkness.

Electricity is an essential. It makes life easy, convenient and efficient. In today’s world, we use it all the time: in homes, in workplaces, on the streets… we use it so much, it’s become nearly impossible to imagine a world without electricity. There are numerous things that are powered by this spark of energy: heating, cooling, lights, cellphones, and robots to name a few. Not only that, but electricity can even save lives, by powering the instruments in hospitals that keep people from passing away. In the time of the coronavirus, electricity helps power the devices that we use to access education and communicate with those whom we may not be able to interact with in person. But where does it all come from? Well, yes, electricity is delivered by power lines and power plants, but where exactly do we access it from? Where can we harvest electricity, this thing that we rely on so much for almost everything in our lives? The answer is simple. It’s contained within something small and sometimes overlooked. It’s contained within something which seems boring, but is so, so important. It’s contained beneath that white sheet of plastic, plastered to the wall. Our source of energy can be accessed from the power outlet.

In my sketch today, I have decided to draw the power outlet. Usually when it comes to art, we like to draw big things, intricate things, like people or landscapes. But when I looked around my house and I found the power outlet, I was inspired, and full of wonder. How could something so miniscule and simple hold something we rely so heavily on? It intrigued me, so I drew it using some shading techniques. I think the minimalistic drawing has a lot of meaning behind it, which is why I am sharing it with you.

Electricity has made a great impact on our lives, but till this day, we still haven’t explored it’s full potential. This post marks the very beginning of a new series I will be writing about. Keep an eye out for my next series of posts, which will be published soon!
